POLAND

To this day, Poland is left off countless backpacking itineraries and I cannot begin to understand why. Like its Eastern European neighbors, travel here is extremely budget-friendly. It is also home to some of the most beautifully preserved Gothic architecture in all of Europe - particularly its medieval castles and city squares! What impresses me most though is its personality. Poland is a nation that could not care less whether you like it or not. Its nature is raw and untouched; its history is gritty and perseverant; its swagger is prideful and genuine. In unique Polish fashion, in this country what you see is what you get!

  • Updated COVID-19 Travel Information:

  • Currency:

    • The official currency of Poland is the Polish Złoty (PLN)

      • $1 USD = 3.75 PLN

  • Pricing for Leisure Travelers:

    • Average Hotel Expenses = 265-325 PLN/Night ($70-$85 USD/Night)

    • Average Food/Drink Expenses = 55-115 PLN/Day ($15-$30 USD/Day)

  • Pricing for Backpackers:

    • Average Hostel Expenses = 35-75 PLN/Night ($9-$19 USD/Night)

    • Average Food/Drink Expenses = 25-65 PLN/Day ($7-$17 USD/Day)

  • Communication:

    • Polish is the country’s official language but, as with most European nations, you will find most locals are proficient English speakers.

  • Transportation:

    • Train: Poland’s main train operator is PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A. They run trains across Poland and to select destinations in Austria, Czechia, and Germany. For travel to other European destinations, book via Polrail Service.

    • Bus: Poland’s main bus operator, PolskiBus, was bought out by FlixBus in 2018. The give and take with bus versus train travel is that buses take longer but cost less.

    • Airplane: The flag carrier of Poland is LOT Polish Airlines. They offer low-cost domestic flights across Poland and non-stop flights from Warsaw to many Eastern European destinations. You can also monitor Skyscanner for deals.

    • Taxi/Uber: Uber only operates in Poland’s larger cities, but you can find affordable taxis everywhere.

  • Miscellaneous:

    • Although Russians will try to tell you otherwise, vodka was invented in Poland! It is said to have been first produced sometime in the 8th century. After enjoying a late night out “experiencing Polish culture”, be sure to soak up the alcohol with a late-night feast of pierogies (delicious Polish dumplings)!
