SWITZERLAND

Pegged as the most expensive country in the world, Switzerland is a nation with very strong values. The Swiss are private, innovative, deliberate, open-minded, and harmonious. Its cities are culturally diverse, its mountains and lakes are pristine, and its cuisine is decadent. Ever heard of the Swiss Alps? How about Swiss chocolate, Swiss cheese, or Swiss Army knives? My point exactly. It is no mistake Switzerland is world-renowned. Visit for yourself to find out why!

  • Communication:

    • There are four national languages of Switzerland - German, French, Italian, and Romansh. Where you are in the country will more than likely determine the primary language spoken. If you are in Western Switzerland, you will hear a lot of Swiss French. If you are in Central Switzerland, Swiss German will be the default. If you are in Eastern Switzerland, you can expect locals to speak Swiss Italian, Swiss German, or Romansh. No matter the region though, you can confidently assume English will be spoken conversationally by natives.

  • Transportation:

    • Train: Switzerland’s national railway company is Swiss Federal Railways (SBB CFF FFS). Considered one of Europe’s premier railway systems, their trains run all across the continent. It is easily the most popular mode of transit.

    • Bus: Since trains dominate the transportation scene in Switzerland, bus travel is much less common. If you do decide this is the route you want to go though, book tickets via Bookaway.

    • Airplane: The country’s flag carrier is Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS), a member of Star Alliance. Based out of Zürich, their planes fly all throughout Europe as well as to select destinations in Africa, Asia, North America, and South America. You can always fly in and out of Switzerland on any of the low-cost airlines as well (easyJet, Norwegian, Ryanair, etc.). Tickets can be purchased on their websites or via Skyscanner.

    • Taxi/Uber: Ubers and taxis can be found everywhere but will be pricey. Whenever possible, utilize public transportation.

  • Miscellaneous:

    • Switzerland is well known on the global stage for its historic neutrality - it has not been involved in a war since 1505!
